Alumni & Parents Weekend and N.J. golf outing highlight Association’s THON activities
Final preparations are being made for the 2004 version of America’s largest student-run philanthropy. The opening hour of Dance Marathon, more affectionately referred to as THON, is little more than one week away. This year, the Alumni Association’s THON activities will feature a little of the old, and a little of the new.
The Alumni Association will once again welcome alumni who danced in THON as students, as well as parents of current THON dancers, back to University Park on Dance Marathon weekend. This annual event reconnects alumni, while also giving them the opportunity to relive their THON experience. For parents, special programs throughout the weekend offer a behind-the-scenes look at an event that rallies the volunteer efforts of thousands of Penn State students. New this year is a special golf outing at the Brooklake Country Club in Florham Park N.J. on May 10. "Swinging for the Kids," sponsored by the Northern New Jersey Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association, the Penn State Dance Marathon, and the Penn State Alumni Association, will donate all proceeds to Dance Marathon.
Notable alumni participants include: Ed DeChellis, Penn State men's basketball head coach; Pete Giftopoulos, former linebacker great whose interception sealed the Nittany Lions' 1986 national championship victory; former Penn State and N.Y. Jets standout Lou Benfatti; Fran Fisher, longtime voice of Penn State football; and Sports Illustrated journalist Tom Verducci.
