New gardens dramatically enhance Alumni Center grounds
Completed in spring 2003, the Secret Garden of the Hintz Family Alumni Center has quickly become a popular respite for alumni and students alike. From class lectures to informal gatherings, the garden location has taken its place among the favorite green spaces on the University Park campus. The Secret Garden, however, is just one part of a major renovation to the Alumni Center grounds. Two more gardens—the Water and Rainbow gardens—are currently under construction.

Funding changes put University at a crossroads
The face of higher education is changing, with the distinction between public and private universities blurring, according to President Graham B. Spanier. Pennsylvania's support of higher education has for decades lagged behind other states, staying near the bottom of the 50 states in financial commitment to higher education. The last time such data were collected, Pennsylvania ranked third in the nation for its support of private colleges and universities for revenue it provided per full-time student. By contrast, when the same measures are applied to public universities in the state, Pennsylvania ranks near the bottom in its support.

The legend of the lion turns 100 this month
On Tuesday, April 20, the legend of one of the most recognized college mascots in the country—the Nittany Lion—turns 100. The tale of the Nittany Lion originated with Harrison D. "Joe" Mason ’07 EMS at a baseball game against Princeton on April 20, 1904. To mark this important occasion, Penn State will hold a ceremony at Mason’s gravesite in Monongahela, Pa., near Pittsburgh.
