Combining a svelte design and a long history of Volvo safety, the 2012 Volvo C70 is actually two cars in one. With the folding steel roof up, the C70 is a smoothly styled premium coupe. Press a button, and in about 30 seconds, you’re presented with an elegant convertible.
The 2012 Volvo C70 carries echoes of its S60 brother in its redesigned headlamps and distinctive front end. There are also shades of the classic P1800 coupe in there, and the iconic crossbar grille capped with the Volvo “iron” insignia leaves no question about who makes the stylish C70. New for 2012 are chrome accents on the front and rear fascias and new 18-inch alloy wheels. The power-folding hardtop is also now available in a contrasting color to the rest of the body, further setting the C70 apart from other premium European coupes by offering an eye-catching styling element not available outside a customizer’s shop.
The interior of the C70 is signature modern Volvo, featuring the ultra-thin center stack that feels as if it were lifted right off the car show floor. A redesigned, newly textured instrument panel is widened for a sleeker look and an enhanced atmosphere of luxury in the C70 cabin. For 2012, the C70 offers Beechwood leather upholstery, and buyers can now also choose Black Oak décor inlays. Soft leather swathes supportive seats with standard power-adjustment for the driver and front-seat passenger. Heated seats are part of the Climate Package, which adds the Interior Air Quality System (IAQS) featuring humidity and rain sensors to the standard Electronic Climate Control, and also adds headlamp washers.
The 2012 Volvo C70 is available in two basic configurations – the C70 T5 (MSRP $40,450) and the C70 T5 Inscription (MSRP $44,350). Both are well equipped and powered by an efficient and strong 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine paired with a five-speed Geartronic automatic transmission. The T5 has 227 hp and 236 lb/ft of torque on tap while the Inscription turns up the wick to 250 hp and 273 lb/ft. Both powertrains will net you 28 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.
Inscription models are set apart by LED running lamps in the front spoiler, a chrome front surround, high-gloss black wheels and grille, interior brightwork accents on the leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel, sport pedals and uniquely-stitched upholstery. The dashboard and instrument panel are also covered in leather on C70 Inscription models.
Premier Plus and Platinum trim levels are available to enhance either C70 configuration as well. Premier Plus adds convenient Keyless Driver, Rear Park Assist, HomeLink universal remote integration and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. Going for the Platinum Package adds a navigation system with voice control, a premium sound system and a dual eight-inch subwoofer system for enhanced bass response.
Premium audio is just the start of the technology integrated into the C70. Bluetooth capability has been upgraded for 2012 to allow music streaming, as well as hands-free phone operation. In fact, Volvo is the only automotive brand to offer Bluetooth music streaming across all its models. Another piece of technology Volvo offers on every 2012 model is a new mobile application that allows communication between you and your car, even when you’re far away from each other. The free mobile app is an extension of Volvo On Call, and it integrates with an iPhone or Android smartphone to give you an intuitive, easy-to-use way to stay in touch with your car.
Standard safety innovation built the Volvo reputation, which means C70 occupants are well protected. The C70 features Volvo Dynamic Stability and Traction Control, plus the Side-Impact Protection System. The Volvo Rollover Protection System (ROPS) uses a gyroscopic sensor to deploy sturdy metal hoops if a rollover situation is detected, creating a protective survival space whether the roof is up or down. Active Bending Lights (ABL) is also part of the active safety arsenal, swiveling the headlamp beam into curves where you most need the light. Door-mounted inflatable curtain airbags are unique to the C70, and are cleverly designed to offer the protection you’d find in a fixed-roof vehicle with roof-mounted curtain airbags.
The C70 has it all – style, safety and sophistication. Top-up or top-down, it’s one of the most distinctive automobiles on the market, offering exciting performance and state-of-the-art occupant protection. While most convertibles are two-person, fair-weather friends, the Volvo C70 is capable rain, shine, sleet or snow, and it’ll look great the whole time.
