Making a Memorable New England December
Skiing, holiday celebrations and more will make your season unforgettable.

New England is home to some of the country’s most beautiful scenery, and though blizzards have their downsides, a fresh blanket of snow only enhances the natural splendor of the region. To make this a December to remember, check out some of the area’s destinations and activities.
The Craftsbury Nordic Center, in northeastern Vermont, offers some of the most pristine cross-country skiing trails in New England, hosting competitive events and recreational skiers all season long. Choose a relaxing trail like Duck Pond, or challenge yourself to the terrain of the Grand Tour trail. Visit www.craftsbury.com/skiing/nordic_center/home.htm for more information.
For a more event-filled snow experience, Maine’s Sugarloaf Mountain Resort – the largest ski area east of the Rockies – offers activities and entertainment for all ages. Located in Carrabassett Valley, the resort features skiing and snowboarding runs, as well as tubing hills, zip lines and more. Be sure to check out the special events running throughout the season, especially when the mountain lights up with the New Year’s Eve fireworks display. You’ll find a schedule of events and details at www.sugarloaf.com/index.html.
If being driven over the snow is more your cup of tea, check out the Safari Tours offered by Alpine Adventures of Lincoln, New Hampshire. Using Swiss vehicles called Pinzgauers, skilled drivers and guides at Alpine will take you on a tour to places almost impossible to get to, even in good weather, leading you on an unforgettable winter exploration. For more information, visit www.alpinezipline.com/adventure-tours/.
Head into Maine for another form of snow transportation – dog sledding. New England Dog Sledding offers a variety of tours and activities that will help you get to know the dogs and the sport of sledding. It’s a great way to discover the White Mountain National Forest. Plan your adventure at www.newenglanddogsledding.com.
For a more urban holiday season setting, Boston offers a variety of festive locales. Don’t miss Boston Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker. With choreography, dancers and costumes that dazzled audiences last year, this production returns until December 31, 2011. Find information about this and other Boston Ballet performances at http://boxoffice.bostonballet.org/storefront/c2012NUTCRACKER-p0.html.
Another holiday tradition to add to your list is Rhode Island’s Christmas in Newport, a month-long celebration with activities offered every day in December. The city of Newport has been hosting the event since 1971, and each year, residents and local businesses are as busy as elves trying to outdo themselves.
Be sure to take some time this December to appreciate all that winter has to offer. The holidays are magical in New England, and there are so many ways to enjoy everything the season brings.
