Get a jump-start on the New Year by starting these resolutions early

There may be plenty of time left in 2016, but it is the perfect time to start thinking about your New Year's resolutions for 2017. If tradition holds pat, you will lay out bad habits that you wish to break or good habits you want to keep, and after the stroke of midnight on Jan. 1, you will set about actualizing those wishes.

But perhaps the best way to ensure that your New Year's resolution sticks this time around is to get a head start before the ball drops. Psychology professor Art Markman, writing for Time Magazine, states that the failure of New Year's resolutions is predicated upon a lack of effort. Establishing a habit prior to the start of the New Year and sticking to it will not only benefit you in the short term, but it will help provide the confidence necessary to undertake more life-altering changes.

To get you started on your path to improvement, consider the following New Year's resolutions as ones that you should be starting as soon as possible.

Get back into shape

One of the more common resolutions is to become more active and lose weight. If this is an ambition of yours, there is no better time to start than the present. Gym memberships are likely being offered at lower rates and with additional perks to entice sales, so take advantage of the deals and make an investment in your health. Getting into the habit of exercising throughout the holiday season up through New Year's Eve will not only help learn how to handle the temptation of overeating, but it will incentivize you for hitting the gym on a regular basis. If you take care of yourself at the gym and by eating right six days out of the week, you will have earned that slice of pumpkin pie or that adult beverage.

Quit smoking

Smoking is a difficult habit to break, but the cost of financial strain of being a regular smoker during the holiday season should be incentive enough to consider stopping now. Think of how much money you will save to spend on gifts and merrymaking by cutting your habit in half if not cutting it out entirely. Additionally, breaking yourself of the habit to step out and smoke during the winter will mean less time spent on cold corners and porches.

Saving money

The idea of saving money at the height of the holiday season may seem far-fetched, but it is not nearly as difficult as you may think. Setting aside a small amount of money, be it on a daily basis or with whatever frequency you receive a paycheck, will create a pattern that can be built upon over time. Even if you start out saving $5 every week or $50 from every paycheck, there is no amount too small to start a good habit.

There is never a bad time to start something new or quit doing something that you no longer wish to do. If you find that your willpower is not what you had presumed it would be after the end of 2016, allow yourself the chance to start over and make the changes that you need to improve your life.
