The 2012 Nissan Frontier, the versatile midsize pickup, offers configurations and engine choices that serve a broad audience of buyers from families to working professionals who need rugged performance from their trucks.
Engine and Performance
The 2012 Nissan Frontier (MSRP starting at $18,740) comes in two-door King Cab and four-door Crew Cab body styles, four-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive and a choice of a powerful 4.0-liter V6 or 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder (King Cab only) engines. Crew Cab models seat five and offer an available Long Bed.
The 4.0-liter V6 is a rugged engine with 261 hp and 281 lb/ft of torque (more than the GMC Canyon), plus, among other features, an aluminum block and cylinder heads, Teflon-coated pistons, Nissan Variable Induction Control System, Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System and a silent two-stage timing chain. It comes with an available five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission or six-speed manual transmission. When properly equipped, it is rated to tow up to 6,500 pounds (4x2).
The 2.5-liter DOHC inline four-cylinder features 152 hp and 171 lb/ft of torque and is available in the King Cab 4x2 only. It comes standard with a five-speed manual transmission and returns an EPA-estimated 23 mpg highway. The 2.5-liter powertrain can tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped.
Strong Variety
The S trim level is available on both the King Cab and Crew Cab models and features a 2-Wheel Active Brake Limited-slip (new for 2012), a full-length ladder box frame, chrome rear bumper and rear privacy glass.
Select the SV with four-cylinder engine and you get 16-inch alloy wheels, a body-colored front bumper, chrome rear bumper, air conditioning, AM/FM/CD audio system, sliding rear window and dual sun visors with extenders and vanity mirrors.

The SV V6 trim adds the V6 powerplant and a front-tow hook on the 4x4. Crew Cab models add a factory-applied spray-on bed liner with bedrail caps, and a Utili-track® system as well. New for 2012 is the available Sport Appearance Package on King Cab and Crew Cab SV models. The package includes 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and front grille with Dark Hyper Silver finish, body-colored front and rear bumpers, sport cloth seat trim with embroidered “Frontier” logo, foglamps, body-side “Frontier” sport graphics, white-faced gauges and Bluetooth.
The PRO-4X (4x4 only) delivers the serious off-road performance. It comes with Bilstein off-road performance shocks, an electronic locking rear differential, Clutch Start/Cancel (with the six-speed manual transmission), skid plates to protect sensitive parts of the undercarriage, 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels, foglamps, a body-colored grille, unique interior trim and white-faced gauges.
The SL, available only in the Crew Cab version, has all the features of the SV V6 plus 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, foglamps, step rails, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, a roofrack with crossbars, automatic headlights, Bluetooth hands-free phone system and a Rockford Fosgate AM/FM/MP3/in-dash six-CD audio system.
Frontier Safety Features
The 2012 Frontier includes a long list of safety equipment including Zone Body construction with front and rear crumple zones and the Nissan Advanced Air Bag System. Also standard are Vehicle Dynamic Control, Front-seat Active Head Restraints and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System.
