Leaves are turning colors, apple picking is underway, Halloween and Thanksgiving are coming and of course, there’s football. Yes, fall is here! Why not kick off the season with some fun and unique decorating ideas that will make your home even more inviting this autumn.
Take cues from Mother Nature for the color scheme. Add some intense reds and pinks, vibrant yellows and oranges and even browns and copper. Leaves are changing to rich colors and these can be reflected in your decorating!
Why use artificial decorations when you can find everything you need right in nature? Do-it-yourself crafts and decorations can save you money and also give your home a more natural look. Stop by any farmer’s market and pick up seasonal crops such as apples, gourds and squash. Arrange them in baskets or place them on tables and even on fireplace mantels. When you think of fall, the first thing that may come to mind is the pumpkin! Thanks to its vivid orange color, it will brighten up any space, so don’t be afraid to use it inside your home as well!
Walk outside and collect some colorful leaves, pinecones and acorns to add to the decorations. Mix and match different components to make unique arrangements! Keep surfaces clean by placing an autumn-toned piece of cloth under arrangements.
Remember coming home to the smell of warm apple pie baking in your mom’s oven? Maybe you don’t have time to cook, but it doesn’t mean that you can’t conjure up a few memories! With autumn-scented candles, you can bring some sensory excitement to your house with scents like pumpkin spice, cranberry, vanilla and even pine. If you’d rather fill your home with the scent of some homemade cooking, we’re sure your family won’t mind!
Use your imagination and make candleholders out of small gourds and mini pumpkins! Cut the tops off a gourd or pumpkin and scoop out the inside to make room for a small candle or tea light. Tip: Once you cut into the gourds, they will only last for a few days before they must be replaced. Plan your cutting accordingly! With largest gourds or even small squash, you can make a “bowl” that you can use to serve soup to guests. Just make sure that the gourd is uniformly shaped and has a flat bottom!
Change the way your furniture looks with slipcovers of heavier fabric and earth tones. Try fabrics like cotton flannel, faux leather, chenille and velvet. You can also change smaller things such as pillows, throw blankets, curtains and even bathroom towels! Changing the fabrics and covers in your home is a simple and affordable way to give your home a fresh look.
It’s not just about decorating the inside of your home. Spruce up the front walkway and porch. Scatter pumpkins and gourds along the walkway and on the front steps. You can even tie some cornhusks to a light pole or porch rail and buy one or two hay bales on which to display pumpkins and gourds. Don’t forget that you can still take advantage of your porch. Fall weather is the perfect time to curl up on your porch with a good book or cup of coffee! Change the cushions to autumn-hued ones and add some comfy pillows and throw blankets.
Give your home a look that will last you all season and that you’ll fall in love with!
