Preparing for the IRS - Your 2009 Form 990
Your Most Important Public Document
http://www.pbma.org/08LasVegas/PresentationsPapers...

Editors Note: For many years Ted Hart has been urging all nonprofits across the United States to understand that the IRS 990 form is more than just an annual tax filing, but is instead a charities most important public document. This document must be prepared carefully and must include all leadership at the nonprofit in its drafting, review and adoption before submission to the IRS.

You are required by law to provide a copy of your three most recent 990 and 1023 forms to anyone who would request it in person, via email or by post.

Debi Heiskala as Deloitte Touche has created an excellent guide for nonprofit leadership in preparing your next IRS 990.

Review IRS requirements:

Advice on preparing your 990:

http://www.pbma.org/08LasVegas/PresentationsPapersPPTs/Davis-Heiskala-Revised%20990%20presentation.pdf

As Mr. Hart says, never ever submit another 990 to the IRS without first having had your entire leadership read the document and sign off on it. This document is a very important public statement to funders and the community.

Early Online Giving Report - December 2008 - Encouraging
December accounted for about 21% of the year's transaction volume, but 48% of the total dollars raised
http://forums.blackbaud.com/blogs/connections/arch...

Organizations had steady growth in their online giving through the first and second quarters of 2008. There was a slight decrease in online giving during the third quarter of the year, specifically the month of August. The final months of the year saw online giving rebound leading up to the typical end-of-year giving spikes. December and June were the two largest months for online giving.

Mobile donations may grow tenfold
Rapid Growth Predicted from $500,000 in 2008

by Mickey Alam Khan

Mobile donations are said to have crossed $500,000 in 2008, indicating the growing acceptance of a new channel for nonprofits to raise funds for causes.

In what is recognized as the first year of mobile giving, donations through the mobile phone are said to have exceeded the $300,000 raised through the Internet in 1997 – acknowledged as the first major year for online giving. Thus is the assessment of Mobile Accord Inc., an approved service provider of the Mobile Giving Foundation.

“What it tells us is that people are adapting to new technology faster than they ever have before,” said Tony Aiello, senior vice president of business development at Mobile Accord, Denver, CO. “That’s a good sign.

“Mobile giving has the ability to match or even outperform online,” he said.
