Who could forget the chants of “Ole, Ole, Ole” nearly 10 years ago when World Cup soccer entered Central Florida and literally swept the city off its feet with the fervor and excitement surrounding the international event?
Orlando successfully won a bid to host five soccer matches that attracted the attention of millions of viewers across the globe, and one decade later, plans are in place for a reunion celebration to remember and commemorate those few weeks in 1994 when soccer won the hearts of Central Floridians.
“We wanted to plan something for the volunteers and spectators who participated in the events in ’94 that would allow them to visit with old friends and remember what a great experience this was for our community,” said Joanie Schirm, who led the city’s improbable but successful bid as a host city for the world’s most anticipated sporting event, and who now coordinates the 10th Anniversary celebration.
Throughout the summer, activities have been planned to remember and celebrate what World Cup Soccer meant to Central Florida in 1994. Fans, volunteers and guests are invited to join in on the following events:
Noon, Thursday, June 10—A commemorative luncheon hosted by the Downtown Orlando Partnership (DOP) and the Legacy Soccer Foundation will be held at the Downtown Expo Center (located next to the Marriott Hotel) to celebrate memories, recall behind-the-scenes stories and view a World Cup ’94 highlights video.
