Chamber Welcomes A New Day

El Nuevo Dia (The New Day), the largest newspaper in Puerto Rico, began publishing the only Spanish-language daily newspaper in the region this month.

The publication, with the same name of its parent paper, will have an initial circulation of about 25,000 and a newsstand price of 50 cents. The paper’s logo, a rising sun, familiar to its corporate namesake, has a small orange set to the side, embracing Florida as its new home.

The Central Florida region boasts almost 500,000 Hispanics, of which more than half are Puerto Ricans, and mostly familiar with the El Nuevo Dia brand.

The paper, owned by the Ferre Rangel family for 32 years, has the largest paid daily circulation (204,000) and Sunday (245,000) in Puerto Rico, with group sales of $450 million.

Until now, several weekly newspapers have served Central Florida’s Hispanic community. “Our vision is to give the Hispanic community a voice and a means to get important information every day, “ said José Maldonado, Editor. “You can’t make important decisions based on mere weekly information; you need it every day.”

During a visit to the newspaper last week, Jacob Stuart and Jose Maldonado met with Magda Torres, Business Writer, to discuss the demographic changes in our region and to share some of the accomplishments of the Hispanic community in Central Florida.

“Our philosophy at the Orlando Regional Chamber of Commerce is to create an environment where we can all celebrate and promote the diverse cultures of our region. For the past four years, our Chamber has enjoyed powerful partnerships with several organizations, including the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.  This partnership is a source of pride for us because it creates an awareness of the significant cultural, social, and economic contributions that the Hispanic community makes to our society everyday,” said Stuart.

Beginning this week, and in celebration of the National Hispanic Heritage Month, the Orlando Regional Chamber of Commerce will be featuring a news story “en español” in EveryMonday and FirstMonday for your reading pleasure. For our first Spanish installment, click here.
