OCBC’s Workforce Housing Scorecard Migrates to
Los Angeles Business Council!

The Los Angeles Business Council will unveil its own Housing Scorecard for Los Angeles – modeled on OCBC’s own Workforce Housing Scorecard - at its Mayoral Housing Summit this October.  OCBC’s Dr. Wallace Walrod, who conducted the research on the Workforce Housing Scorecard for Orange County, will lend his services to the LA project as well.

Like OCBC’s report, the LA Business Council’s Scorecard will underline the critical link between remaining economically competitive and providing an adequate housing supply.  OCBC has further learned that there is interest in the San Diego area in producing a similar report analyzing housing production against jobs creation.

The Los Angeles Business Council's 2007 Mayoral Housing Summit will take place at UCLA on October 17.

City of Irvine Saddled With Impossible Mandate

OCBC strongly supports increased housing production to meet the predictable jobs and population growth of the County.  However, the City of Irvine has recently been mandated by a government agency to plan for and produce almost 36,000 new housing units in just six years.  The directive, issued by the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG), would effectively require Irvine to take on almost 44% of all of Orange County’s growth with only 8% of Orange County’s land area—an impossible mandate to meet.

The City of Irvine has filed a lawsuit challenging SCAG's findings. OCBC and other community partners, including the Orange County Association of Realtors, firmly support Irvine in its objection to this mandate.

OCBC President and CEO Lucy Dunn has been interviewed by the statewide California Planning and Development Report and the OC Metro on this matter, and has stressed that Irvine is already one of the strongest contributors to housing Orange County's workforce as found in OCBC’s 2007 Workforce Housing Scorecard.

Housing Leaders to Meet This Week in Anaheim

The California Business, Transportation and Housing Agency Secretary Dale Bonner and Lynn Jacobs, Director of the California Department of Housing and Community Development will meet with business leaders and OCBC staff in Anaheim this Thursday to discuss local housing issues in Orange County.

Secretary Bonner is holding the Anaheim meeting as part of a statewide series of briefings with housing stakeholders, and OCBC’s Workforce Housing Scorecard – of which the Secretary has been highly supportive - will be used as a basis for Thursday’s discussion.

State Budget Agreement Reached Under Ackerman's Leadership—Insider’s Briefing Upcoming for BIZPAC
Last Tuesday’s budget deal ended a 52-day deadlock the day after the legislature returned from summer recess.  OCBC praises Senator Dick Ackerman and his steadfast leadership of a unified Republican caucus that staunchly advocated a stance in favor of fiscal responsibility.  Their efforts ultimately secured the governor’s promise to cut $700 million from the $103 billion budget, and additionally shielded local governments from potential climate change litigation being brought forth by the Attorney General’s office.

OCBC's BIZPAC will be honored to host Senator Ackerman on October 16 for a private briefing on the 2007 legislative session.  This event benefits BIZPAC's efforts to promote and protect the public policy agenda of the Orange County Business Council.  Contact Todd Priest for more information on the October 16 event.

OCBC Hosts U.S. Representative Joe Knollenberg
Orange County Business Council hosted U.S. Representative Joe Knollenberg
(R-MI)
, Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, August 14 at the Center Club in
Costa Mesa as part of its newly established transportation advisory council, OCMoves.

Rep. Knollenberg, together with Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle toured the 241, ARTIC and was briefed on Measure M improvements and praised OCBC for its leadership role in the renewal campaign.  Pictured above with Supervisor Bates, OCBC's Lucy Dunn and Supervisor Moorlach, he was stunned to learn -- as many residents are -- that Orange County is the nation’s fifth largest county, and was particularly impressed with OCBC's efforts surrounding regional goods movement.

OCMoves was founded in partnership with the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA), the Building Industry of Orange County (BIA/OC) and other county transportation stakeholders to advocate for Orange County’s transportation priorities at the federal, state and local levels.

OCBC will continue to host transportation leaders throughout the year to brief them on Orange County’s critical infrastructure needs, as well as the county’s role in facilitating the movement of people and goods throughout the region and nation.

Workforce Housing
OCBC's Lucy Dunn Speaks at
Community Housing Conference

OCBC President and CEO Lucy Dunn presented the Workforce Housing Scorecard and moderated a panel at Senator Tom Harman and Assemblyman Van Tran's Community Housing Conference, held at the Westminster Rose Center on August 17.

This conference brought together experts from the government and private sectors to discuss how to increase home ownership in the community and problems and solutions regarding sub-prime mortgages.  A key recommendation from all panelists was for those facing difficulty in making their mortgage payment to contact their lender as soon as possible.  Most lenders offer opportunities to assist homeowners in keeping their home in tough times.

This event is part of a series presented by the
Community Renewal Project, a partnership between California State Legislators and the Capitol Resource Institute intended to provide community leaders with the tools and resources needed to revitalize neighborhoods across California.
