OCBC looks to the silver lining on the proposed budget deal—there is one, maybe even a couple. It appears there’s an attempt at a framework for a real solution that has been negotiated under the leadership of Governor Schwarzenegger with Legislative leaders of both parties. Yes, it has tax increases—in a troubled economy, this is not good—yet they do not target any one industry sector, but are levied on most of us and are proposed to be temporary. Yes, there are deep spending cuts and a spending cap proposal to help government growth get back in line with revenue receipts.

USC Head Football Coach Pete Carroll shared his motivational wisdom at Orange County Business Council's 2009 Annual Dinner yesterday. The two-time National Champion presented a dynamic "Win Forever" keynote address. Welcomed by five lovely UCLA songleaders to the delight of Bruin fans, Coach Carroll spoke to nearly 700 suit-and-tie-clad business leaders. "All of us want to win, but wouldn't you want to win forever? It's finding out how good you can become at something and making it come to life," preached Carroll.

OCBC Chairman Larry Buster Leads the Charge for 2009
OCBC Chairman Larry Buster looks to 2009 as a year of opportunity. The upbeat and optimistic approach set the tone for the Annual Dinner last week where Mr. Buster was sworn in as Chair.
“The Orange County Business Council is the leading voice of business in Orange County ,” Buster proclaimed. “As we look ahead to overcome the challenges before us, that voice is louder than ever.”
Buster, Vice President, County Manager of First American Title Company celebrates his 30th anniversary with the company starting back in 1979 as an Assistant Counsel with the legal department. Today his role has expanded to include oversight of both Orange County and San Diego operations.

What Does Federal Economic Stimulus Mean for Southern California?
Tom McKernan, CEO of The Automobile Club of Southern California reports: The United States is poised to enact the largest economic stimulus package in history. The president and congressional leaders have told the nation they intend to use stimulus funds to upgrade roads, bridges, mass transit and other infrastructure - something most Americans agree should be a high priority. But so far, the reality is quite different from the rhetoric.
A substantial investment of stimulus funds in transportation would both create jobs in the near term and provide a lasting return to taxpayers and the economy by improving mobility and the movement of goods and services. Americans say they want their tax dollars spent on infrastructure. Politicians say they want to make infrastructure funding a priority. So what's the problem?

OC Hispanic Chamber Honors OCBC's Latino Educational Attainment Intiative
The Orange County Business Council is pleased to announce that its program, Latino Educational Attainment (LEA), is being honored by the Orange County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce as Education Program of the year at the 2009 Estrella Awards.
This award is presented to an individual or organization that has demonstrated commitment to the Hispanic community through the support, advancement, and education of Hispanic youth, small business, and corporate partnerships to promote long-term academic and/or professional success. Representatives and community leaders from Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Diego counties attend this event and support the Chamber’s overall goals of advancing the Hispanic community.
