Over 300 members of the financial community attended NYSSA’s Annual Dinner on June 11, 2008 at The Westin New York at Times Square to hear featured speaker Byron Wien. The event also honored NYSSA’s Volunteers of the Year, SEMI student scholarship recipients, Investment Research Challenge winners and departing board members. New additions to the program were the honoring of the lifetime members and the inaugural lifetime achievement award which was given to Byron Wien. NYSSA Holds First High Yield Bond Pre-Conference Workshop
On June 10, 2008, NYSSA held its first High Yield Bond pre-conference workshop titled “High Yield Basic Tools: Credit Analysis, Covenants, Ratings and Valuation.” Conference chair, Marty Fridson developed this workshop to give investors a deeper understanding of the market’s driving forces. The half-day tutorial included presentations from analysts Kim Noland, Esq., and Shelly Lombard from Gimme Credit discussing credit analysis; Avinash V. Ganatra, Partner, Dewey & Le Boeuf discussing covenants, and David Munves, Divisional Managing Director, Capital Markets Research Group, Moody’s Investors Service discussing ratings and value.

8th Annual Metals and Mining Conference
On June 4-5, 2008, NYSSA held its 8th Annual Metals and Mining Conference in which companies discussed the future for their businesses and the industry overall. Victor Flores, senior mining analyst for HSBC provided his outlook on the metals and mining industry on day one of the conference.

NYSSA Member J. Armand Musey Climbs Mount Everest
NYSSA member J. Armand Musey, CFA, completed his goal of climbing the Seven Summits when he reached the pinnacle of Mount Everest (elevation: 29,035 feet) on May 24, 2008. Musey was president and co-founder of Near Earth LLC, a boutique investment bank specializing in the satellite, media and telecom industries, when he left in 2007 to work as a consultant and train for the climb.
