NYSSA Announces CFA Scholarship Winners
NYSSA and CFA Institute have awarded scholarships to five Level I candidates taking the December exam. Scholarship winners are a select group that meets strict criteria that take into consideration a number of factors, including experience and interest in the investment profession, adherence to ethical standards, financial need and commitment to NYSSA and CFA Institute. Scholarship recipients received awards valuing more than $2,000. NYSSA provided free registration and materials for the Weekly Review, and CFA Institute waived the CFA exam program fees (less a $220 administrative fee).

Ksenia Koban is a legislative financial analyst at the New York City Council where she works to identify budget and fiscal impacts of a variety of local, state and federal programs and policies. She currently specializes in labor, pensions, as well as state and federal budget legislation. She received her graduate degree from the NYU Wagner School of Public Policy specializing in international finance, and her BA in economics and international relations from University of California San Diego. She was recently a fellow on the Alfa Fellowship Program in Moscow, Russia where she worked in the field of microfinance investment throughout Russia and Central Asia. “Attaining the CFA charter is an important step in my career trajectory, as it will provide me with a more complete knowledge of financial principles and investment tools that I will be able to use with confidence in new and emerging markets. I plan to apply my financial expertise to further economic development needs of financially underserved communities locally and internationally.”

Elena Makovskaia recently graduated from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs masters program concentrating in international finance and energy policy and now works as an analyst at Access Industries in New York City. Her aspiration is to be able to provide her colleagues and clients with a professional qualified investment opinion and forecast that they can rely on in making their decisions. In the future she plans to promote innovation in investment administration by bringing together public and corporate sectors, entrepreneurs and investors. “Conceptual foundation, problem solving, analysis and code of ethics, which the CFA Program includes, will help me to increase my knowledge and transform my ideas into action.”

Michael Norris is a 2009 graduate of the Master of Science of Finance Program from the Carroll School of Management at Boston College. His academic credentials include an MBA from the Carroll School of Management at Boston College specializing in finance and an undergraduate degree from Tufts University majoring in economics. He is working towards becoming a CFA charterholder to enhance his qualifications as an investment professional and gain more depth about portfolio management, financial reporting, and financial statement analysis. “As a Jesuit Catholic institution, Boston College infuses business ethics in its teachings to help students address questions about morality as we grow personally and professionally. The CFA Institute continues this commitment and holds its charterholders to strict ethical standards and sound business conduct in assuming responsibility for safeguarding and preserving client assets.”

Brett A. Robison is in the final year of obtaining his BS in Business and Technology from Stevens Institute of Technology. Brett currently attends school and works part-time for Pier Capital LLC, an institutional investor. Consistently working in a technical capacity since the outset of his undergraduate degree, Brett hopes to become a tech/energy research analyst someday. Notable previous jobs/internships include web design and working in the algorithmic trading group at ITG. “I believe the material learned while studying for the CFA combined with my technical experience will provide me with the necessary tools to succeed in any career path I choose. In order to thrive these days you must distinguish yourself from the rest, and the CFA is a surefire way to let everyone know that you are serious and passionate about the investment profession.”

Shangxuan Zhang is nearing completion of her master's degree in statistics at Stony Brook, having earned her master's and bachelor's degrees in computer science. She currently works at the Medical Informatics Department at Stony Brook Hospital. Her past work experience includes positions at VeriSign and Stanford University. Zhang says, “The CFA Charter is an essential certificate in the financial field.” After a solid study of the CFA charter, she wants to focus on the management, research, and development of securities trading, including mathematical modeling, portfolio management, trading strategy, order-execution systems, marketing, and the trading desk.
