Chromium: How It Benefits Blood Sugar

There are a number of good reasons to take dietary supplements. To start with, many essential nutrients have become less available in the food supply. The consumption of processed and refined foods is part of the problem, as is the depletion of minerals in our soils. Many medications also promote nutritional deficiencies. Stress and advancing age increase the need for vitamins and minerals as well. Older people are not as capable of absorbing many nutrients from food. For example, vitamin D deficiency in the elderly is rampant and cannot be fully met by food or sun exposure. The same is true for vitamin B12, which also declines with age. Chromium levels in our body decrease steadily over time, which has been tied to disorders like diabetes and heart disease, especially in older people. Supplements are one of the most effective ways of delivering these nutrients.
