Quick Poll #1: Toyota Recall
Toyota and Total Quality Management (TQM) were synonymous. Business schools cite the company as the benchmark for good manufacturing practices and The Toyota Way is required reading. Today Toyota is at the center of a major recall, with its concern for safety being questioned. Mr. Toyoda has taken responsibility for the current situation and came before the Congressional committee with apologies and a plan for changing the means by which the company operates, complete with a March 30 date for the first meeting of its new safety review board. Mr. Toyoda cited the company’s pursuit of growth clearly stretched its lean philosophy close to breaking point and in so doing had become “confused” about some of the priorities that first made it great.
