LAST ISSUE: Last issue's collaborators?   The Bering Sea Bad Boys

Alaska Regional INSIGHT
Mat-Su

There is little argument that SEAFOOD is Alaska's signature food product, however, this issue we highlight the Matanuska Valley where we are pleased to report on two new food manufacturers and a growing grocery retailer that all add to the strength of Alaska's food supply chain.  More on Alaska's seafood next issue as we return to Southeast Alaska.

Natural/Artisan Foods Debut
Adding Value To Alaska's Bounty

This year, The Matanuska Valley is expanding its menu of foods well beyond its famous produce. Two separate companies are well on their way to processing of new food and beverage products. The first belongs to Kyle and Sandy Beus of Teelands Mercantile (Wasilla) and is for artisan cheeses, ice cream and candy. The second is by Rob Wells of Robert Wells and Company, LLC. for Alaska Natural Milk (hormone free) which will be the first guaranteed all-local milk product.  Each company is leveraging its business and production experience with the growing demand for specialty products for consumers and commercial buyers.

Welcome Back Alaska Silk!
Premiere Desserts Return To Serve Alaskan Restaurants/Food Service

Phyllis Buzzini of Alaska Silk Pie Company started her specialty desserts in Anchorage over 20 years ago. Her markets quickly grew into national gift catalogs and gourmet food retailers across the country driving her to relocate her production in Seattle. It was with great pleasure that we learned at Global Food Alaska 2007 that Phyllis was collaborating with Will and Vanessa McDonald of the Confectioner’s Studio to once again offer the famous Alaska Silk Pie's to Alaska's loyal customers.
