Often accompanied by talented captains and crewmembers, guests are encouraged to bring small musical instruments on their cruises.

Music, storytelling and the sea have gone hand in hand for millennia. Some of the great musical traditions originated on island nations and it’s no wonder – the natural rhythm of the sea and gentle breezes are musical in and of themselves. From lively Celtic tunes to the more raucous beats at various festivals, the Maine Windjammer Association offers plenty of toe-tapping opportunities in 2016.

“There are the special cruises (that feature music), but also, there’s often just a lot of spontaneous storytelling and singing on every cruise,” says Captain Linda of the Heritage.

Every fall, Flash in the Pans Steel Drum band performs at the WoodenBoat Sail-In, this year on September 13.

Like many MWA captains, Garth Wells of the Lewis R. French says his crew keeps their banjo, trumpet, guitar and mandolin handy for playing anything from Johnny Cash and Jimmy Cliff to sea shanties and blue grass, and guests are encouraged to bring their small, acoustic instruments along.
