Gene, who specializes in marine insurance at Allen Insurance and Financial, has worked with the members of the Maine windjammer fleet for more than three decades; the award cites his "many years of dedication and service to the Maine windjammer fleet."

Managing the insurance for an historic wooden, passenger sailing vessel can be challenging at times, said Captain Doug Lee of the Schooner Heritage as he presented the award. "But Gene always answers every question and handles every detail with pleasure and care," said Lee, noting that Gene was the unanimous choice for the award.

The idea of honoring an individual for his or her dedication to the industry came about last winter during one of the captains meetings. The eight members embraced the idea of creating an MWA “Hall of Fame” as a way to express their gratitude to the special people who go the extra mile to help the Maine windjammer fleet.

Allen Insurance and Financial of Camden has been a friend to the windjammer industry since 1963.
