Maine's Islands and the Artists' Life

Entitled "Sun Water Maine," Georgia O'Keeffe's pastel painting expresses her strong connection to the sea, first established in 1920 when she visited the coast of Maine.

For more than a hundred years, Maine’s dramatic landscape has provided inspiration to artists and artisans of every stripe. Paintings inspired by Maine’s people and landscapes hang in galleries all over the world while Maine’s designers provide furnishings and clothing to people from New York to Hong Kong and libraries house innumerable works set in Maine.

Edward Hopper spent more than a few summers on Maine’s coast and islands where he painted
Monhegan’s headlands, lighthouses, beam trawlers, dories and coastal villages.

And every windjammer cruise visits the islands that have played muse to so many of America’s towering artistic talents: the Wyeths, Winslow Homer, Louise Nevelson, Georgia O’Keeffe, Fairfield Porter, Zero Mostel, John Travolta, Glenn Close, E.B. White, and Edward Hopper are among many others whose work and lives have been deeply touched by their visits to or lives lived on Maine’s coast.

Many of Fairfield Porter's paintings were painted in and around the Porter summer home on Great Spruce Head Island in Maine.
Windjammer guests have the opportunity to visit islands from Monhegan where artists went so far as to establish an official artist colony that raises funds for other artists to enjoy the retreat and solitude of the island, to North Haven, home to the likes of designer Angela Adams and architect Henry N. Cobb, partner to I.M. Pei. These artists have been and continue to be inspired by the rich natural resources around them to create everything from handbags and rugs to world-famous buildings and paintings.

North Haven is home to many of Maine's luminaries, including Congresswoman Chellie Pingree.
