FDA DELAYS RULE ON ALUMINUM CONTENT LABELING
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has further delayed the effective date of the rule regulating aluminum content labeling in certain products used in total parenteral nutrition. The FDA established a new date of January 26, 2004.1 This enables the agency to finalize an amendment permitting the labels of small volume parenterals and pharmacy bulk packages containing 25 µg/L or less of aluminum to state, "Contains no more than 25 µg/L of aluminum" rather than the specific aluminum content. Manufacturers also have more time to submit descriptions of the assay methods they use to identify aluminum content.
