The Best Way to Stay Cool This Summer: Have Some Fun!
Summer fun is sizzling!

The sun is out, school is out and it’s time for you and your family to head out. With so many places to go and things to do, you’ll be surprised at what you’ll discover. Galveston Island has more than 32 miles of beach, and it’s the go-to spot for summer fun.

Hang 10! As the highest place on the Texas coast, Galveston gets pretty consistent surf and the winds make it great for kite surfing and wind surfing, too. The place to surf is the Seawall, which features 15 rock jetties and a few fishing piers. The best breaks are near 25th Street and the 37th, 47th, 51st and 61st Street jetties. Head to the area between the Flagship pier and 53rd Street if you want to do some hard-bottomed boogie boarding, wind and kite surfing or use other hard-bottomed crafts. Beginner? Head to the Flagship Hotel at 25th where the waves are typically short (this is also a great spot for long boarders). If you’re looking for more aggressive waves, head to 37th Street.

It’s time to visit the biggest (and we believe coolest) beach in the state: East Beach. In addition to lots of sand, expect to find concerts, contests, bands and other activities throughout the summer. The beach features an outdoor pavilion that has a snack bar, game room, gift shop and volleyball courts. East Beach is located at 1923 Boddeker Drive. Another family-friendly beach to check out is Stewart Beach. In addition to the fun of playing in the surf, the beach has family events such as volleyball tournaments and sandcastle competitions. You’ll also find volleyball courts, an outdoor pavilion and snack bar, a playground, souvenir shop and bathhouse. Stewart Beach is located at 6th Street and Seawall Boulevard.

Reel in the fun and get the catch of the day! Galveston has plenty of spots for fishing; just make sure you have a Texas fishing license. So where should you go to catch what? Head to the Seawall for Flounder, Speckled Trout, Sand Trout, Bull Reds, Sheepshead and Gafftop Sail.

It’s always fun in the sun – just don’t forget to pack your sunscreen! Want Trout and Red Fish? Go to the fishing pier at Seawolf Park. Fish offshore and you might catch Black Tip Shark or Tarpon – go overnight and you might be lucky to find Blue and White Marlin, Tuna, Doardo or Wahoo.

Hop aboard a DUKW (an amphibious truck) for the Galveston Island Duck Tours for a very unique way of seeing the island. You’ll explore 40 blocks on Seawall Boulevard and then cruise across the bayou. Along the way, you’ll learn some interesting and fun facts about the area thanks to your captain. Galveston Island Duck Tours is located at 2500 Seawall Boulevard. For more information, visit www.galvestonducks.com.

There are some ideas for summer fun on Galveston Island. When you go is up to you!
