Anyone who has been through the brutality of junior high school understands what a fair-weather friend is. In the automotive world, there are cars that want nothing to do with the day-to-day drudgery, especially if there's any kind of precipitation. These four-wheeled sunny-day pals can be disproportionate parts great fun and great misery. Any region with seasons needs vehicles that won't turn tail and run at the sight of a solitary snowflake, and the 2010 Toyota RAV4 is the role model for all other vehicles of its ilk.
In an increasingly crowded field of vehicles, the RAV4 manages to stand tall, and Toyota has sprinkled some flavor-enhancement into the recipe for 2010. All levels of RAV4 can now be ordered with a rearview camera that was previously only available on RAV4 Sport and Limited models. The RAV4 also carries Toyota's Star Safety System standard, an integral safety canopy incorporating stability control and antilock brakes to keep occupants on track and safe.
The Sport Appearance Package, which includes an exclusive rear door design (with no spare tire), chrome door handles, heated side mirrors and more is more widely available for both four- and two-wheel drive RAV4s with either the 179-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder or the 269-hp 3.5-liter V6. Sport models also gain a new JBL audio system option, and mild trim and badging details round out the 2010 changes to Toyota's all-conquering crossover. When a vehicle is this good, drastic changes aren't needed.
The RAV4 is well-equipped from the word "go" with standard air conditioning, tilt/telescope steering wheel, an audio system with auxiliary input and six speakers, keyless entry and a thoughtfully designed cabin that maximizes comfort and convenience for passengers in all three rows of seats. Sport models add a sport-tuned suspension, 18-inch wheels, color-keyed fender flares and foglamps. Limited trims add in dual-zone air conditioning, an upgraded audio system, a leather-wrapped shiftknob, Smart Key system with push button start and more. Options can take the RAV4 into luxury territory with the addition of power leather seats and a touch-screen navigation system.
While the two-wheel drive model is all many buyers will need when availing themselves of the other charms the RAV4 has, such as a spacious interior, easy driving demeanor and high build quality, 4x4 RAV4s turn into little mud monsters. V6 RAV4s are not only fleet of foot, but a Tow Prep Package upgrades the radiator, fan and alternator to handle 3,500-pound loads. With the normal horse trailer weighing in at 2,600 pounds, the RAV4 can take you, the family and your prized thoroughbred over hill and dale without breaking a sweat.
There is no wrong choice when it comes to the 2010 Toyota RAV4 (MSRP $21,675). Since it arrived on the scene, this generation of Toyota's RAV4 has been getting top grades from automotive journalists; with Toyota's enhancements for 2010 onboard, that winning streak doesn't look like it'll be ending anytime soon.
