ALUMNI/AE CONNECTIONS PROGRAM NEEDS YOU
Connect with the Class of 2009!
.jpg?i=081308080533)
For the 2006-2007 academic year we started a new program called "Alumni/ae Buddies". This program has become the "Alumni/ae Connections" program. I am inviting alums to be a point of contact, a "touchstone", for a member of the entering class. During the initial contact the alum could be a sounding board for the student's resume. You could also be a resource in the development class or a bridge to another alum or real estate professional that you think might be helpful in some way. Each alum will be assigned one student. The idea is for the students to get an immediate sense and appreciation for the wonderful alumni/ae network of which they are now a part. To sign up for connecting with a member of the current class, CLICK HERE or e-mail me at marionoc@mit.edu. If you send an e-mail, be sure to outline any preferences you have, for example, gender, country, area of interest, background. Volunteer to make the MIT/CRE connection!

The MIT REAL ESTATE EXCHANGE (MITREX)
Recent Additions!
RECENT MITREX UPDATES:
"With an ounce of relief and a pound of pride, you step from your interviewer's office exhilarated that you have made it through yet another step of the job search process. But any good candidate knows that the job interview doesn't end with 'thanks, we'll be in touch.' So, what do you do?"
Innovation begins with questions, and in “MIT style” the goal of the session was to explore the impact on the development process of a new model of for-sale residential development. What is the impact on approvals, financing, construction, marketing/sales, and manufacturing if developers create large blocks of customizable condominiums for potential buyers? What gets approved by municipalities, a total number of units, the number of parking spaces, or something else entirely? Is the risk to banks reduced? Would this reduction be reflected in a lower cost of capital? How do suppliers get product to the developer? What is the role of the architect? Are they needed? What is the impact on construction and the manufacture of the component parts? How are these units marketed? Since buyers can design their interiors, do you focus marketing on the neighborhood, amenities, or on the location in the building/project? These are just some of the questions we pondered during the workshop. Tony Ciochetti, Chairman and Director of the MIT Center for Real Estate, and Kent Larson, Director, Changing Places, in MIT’s Media Lab, designed the session.
The goal of the session was to familiarize participants with some of the financing tools that can be used to achieve development and community objectives. These tools include various tax credits and public financing. An illustrative case was used to bring the points “home”. The workshop was dense with information and quite interesting. Key participants were:
· Beverly Bates, Senior Vice President, The Community Builders
· Andrew Broderick, President , Housing Vermont
· David Cohan, Principal, PeaksCo LLC and CRE '92 & Workshop Organizer
· Michael McDonough, Partner, Murtha Cullina
Stay tuned, theses will be added to MITREX throughout August and September!
If you have not signed up for MITREX, we invite you to do so.
