From the revolutionary spirit to daring artistic directions, New Hampshire is no stranger to expressions of fierce independence. This is combined with a strong sense of community, though, and you can experience both at the University of New Hampshire’s Museum of Art as it celebrates the opening of two new exhibitions on Friday, January 27, 2012: What’s New: Recent Additions to the Collection and Chris Jordan: Running the Numbers. For more information, visit
In Hanover, New Hampshire, help scream the Dartmouth College women’s ice hockey team to victory as it faces off against Cornell University on January 21, 2012. Though not quite the same experience as an evening out at an art exhibition, freedom of expression is guaranteed to be part of the event. Find the full schedule for all Dartmouth athletics at
Rhode Island is no stranger to hard-hitting hockey action, and when the men’s team from the University of Rhode Island, in Kingston, hosts the University of Delaware on January 20, 2012, they’ll be putting on a show no local sports fan will want to miss. The university’s full schedule of athletic events can be found at
For a smaller gathering with a more cerebral focus, try the Philosophy Colloquium with John Schaffer, one of America’s pre-eminent philosophers, hosted by Brown University on January 27, 2012. A lecture and discussion with this professor from Rutgers will be followed by a reception, so you can fill up after your enlightening. Visit for information about all the events and activities you can enjoy at Brown University, located in Providence, Rhode Island.
You can’t think of New England colleges without turning to Massachusetts and the several highly respected schools in the Boston area. Check out an inspiring performance at Harvard University, in Cambridge, by the Roby Lakatos Ensemble, featuring violinist Roby Lakatos on January 27, 2012. The full schedule of events at Harvard can be found at
If you prefer, put on your thinking cap and try some science at Robots & Beyond: Exploring Artificial Intelligence, an exhibit running throughout the month of January at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Museum, also in Cambridge. This exhibit provides hands-on education on some of today’s most amazing technological accomplishments, as well as some of tomorrow’s likely innovations. Robotics and computer enthusiasts of all ages aren’t going to want to miss this. Get more information about this and other upcoming exhibits at the MIT Museum at
Whether you’re more interested in slap shots, robots or metaphysics, the many fine universities of New England are waiting for you to rediscover everything they have to offer. These institutions are meant to serve the public, not simply by educating students, but by providing engaging activities and learning opportunities for the communities in which they exist.
