Sharp deals a blow to plasma TV makers
TOKYO: Sharp Corp said it will begin selling a 65-inch liquid crystal display (LCD) television, the biggest in the world, from August in Japan, dealing a potential blow to Matsushita Electric Industrial Co and other makers of plasma TVs.
Sharp, the world's biggest maker of LCD TVs, said it expected the TV to retail for about 1.68 million yen (US$15,520). That compares to a 65-inch plasma TV made by Matsushita that is listed on a mass retailer's website in Japan for 1.85 million yen.
Sharp already markets a 45-inch LCD TV and is keen to expand its presence in the fast-growing market for flat televisions above 40 inches. The announcement could force Matsushita to lower its prices and may pressure other LCD TV makers as well. – Reuters
