Mercedes-Benz Brings Stars into Alignment for Fashion Week
Sponsoring both New York and Miami fashion weeks helps the brand advance fashion on a global scale.

The lights go up, and the crowd gasps. Photographers crowd the stage, trying to get that one amazing shot that will completely capture the spectacle they are witnessing. Murmurs resound throughout the hall as spectators state their opinions in hushed tones, comparing this year’s style to the last, wondering at the innovation they are witnessing and at the new ground being broken by the designer.

Sound like a fashion show catwalk the night an exclusive collection is released to the world? Or perhaps the unveiling of a brand new concept car in front of an audience of thousands at an international auto show? Or how about both? In many ways, the world of high fashion and the automotive industry share a number of the same attributes. Perhaps most importantly, both prize those who push the envelope and take ideas to the edge of what the market will accept.

It is then perhaps no surprise to learn that Mercedes-Benz has taken an active role in sponsoring the global fashion community. The most important fashion weeks held around the world each year naturally take place in the industry’s capitals with New York assuming a prominent place in the lineup by hosting one for the spring season and one for the fall. Mercedes-Benz supports not only each of those fashion weeks, but also a once-yearly week in Miami. The latter, in no small part due to the climate and personality of the city in which it is held, is the country’s most significant event for swimwear collections.

New York Fashion Week dates back to 1943. It grew in stature over the ensuing decades until it came to occupy its current place in the worldwide fashion pantheon. New York’s Spring Fashion Week (also known as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week) takes place in September and kicks off the year in terms of major fashion events with the Fall Fashion Week usually following in February. The long lead times might seem unusual, but they are fairly standard for an industry moving forward at the speed of light. The New York spring event takes place in Bryant Park, a public space in Manhattan not too far from the Fifth Avenue shops where fashions on display will eventually end up being sold. A number of tents are used to house the spectacle, which is quite large despite invitations being limited to only industry insiders, famous fashion mavens and the press. Although the Bryant Park venue has served it well, Mercedes-Benz has plans to move the event to a new park near Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts next season.

The Mercedes-Benz Miami Fashion Week, otherwise known as Swim, embraces the same serious attitude toward fashion found in its northern companion, but instead applies it to the more lighthearted world of swimwear. Invitation-only and held at the Raleigh Hotel, Swim is the pride of the South Beach fashion scene and an international trendsetter when it comes to beach styles. Absolutely every important swimsuit designer is present and accounted for during the summer event, from Ank by Mirla to Ed Hardy and Xtra Life. In 2009, the event was fortunate to see a number of brand new designers sending models down the runway to strut their stuff and open the minds of audience members who thought they might have already seen it all. Although the show is mostly indoors (unlike New York), attendees are able to mix things up a little through the Raleigh Hotel’s multiple themed venues.

The amount of time and work that goes into crafting a new lineup of cutting edge clothing is in many ways comparable to the engineering and design behind a fine luxury automobile. The natural union of Mercedes-Benz and three important fashion weeks helps to solidify the company’s standing as one of the few automakers truly dedicated to absorbing influences and concepts from as many forward-thinking industries as possible. Its dedication as a company toward advancing the idea of fashion as an art form can be seen not only in its sponsorships, but also in the vehicles it produces.
