The Thunderhead Alliance and Maxxis
Working for Cyclists

As a sponsor of this organization, Maxxis is providing crucial support.

I was at Super Crawl in Salt Lake last month and saw a bunch of rock crawling teams running the Creepy Crawler. I really love that tire, but found out that it is only made in Bias Ply. Are you going to make a radial version anytime soon? - Thanks, Ryan

Yes and no. We will not make the Creepy Crawler in a radial version anytime soon, but we are developing a new Extreme Off-Road radial tire called the Trepador that was unveiled at the 2004 SEMA show. It’s now in the final stages of development and should be available around the end of the first quarter of 2005.

I saw that you have a new Z-rated tire. What sizes does it come in? What are the specs? - Josh

The tire is called the Maxxis Victra MA-Z1. It’s available in sizes from 205/40ZR16 to 285/30ZR20. The specs include a treadwear rating of 280, a AA traction rating and an A temperature rating. We now offer a complete performance line, including H, V, and Z rated tires. More information can be found in the Maxxis.com automotive section.

Your Presa slicks say they are made for supermoto. Would there be any drawback or danger in using them for road racing on a smaller bike (Honda Hawk GT, wt.-330 lbs., top speed 125 mph) with a 160/60 rear tire and a 120 front? The Hawk has a similar weight and top speed compared with some supermotos. - Thanks, Dan

Thank you for your interest in our Presa Supermotard tire line. This line of tires is not recommended for use in any other application outside of its intended purpose of supermotard competition. While the top speeds and vehicle weights are similar, the overall demands on the tires vary between road racing and supermoto. For instance, the dirt section of a supermoto course allows the tire to operate at a cooler temperature versus the higher heat levels involved with road racing.

Does Maxxis have any road race slicks or DOT race tires available? - Thanks, Dan Right

Maxxis does not offer road racing tires of any kind. We do, however, sponsor a WERA Endurance road racing team with our Supermaxx street radial tire. Our goal is to use the endurance series as a testing ground for our next generation radial, which will be a higher performance street/track day tire. In the future, we may offer a road race-specific tire, but we are not working on one at this time.
