When a top team rides great tires, not even the grueling conditions of Baja can keep them from first place. Riding Razrs all the way, Temecula Motorsports took a second straight victory in one of the most grueling events on Earth: the Baja 1000. The race was held November 18-22 in Mexico.
Temecula faced mechanical trouble in the early stages of a race that driver Mike Cafro calls “a nail biter.” But once that problem was solved, “we basically had a perfect race after that,” he said. “Four hundred miles in, we were two hours back from the leader. We just put our heads down and stayed with our game plan. We put ourselves into second place about three quarters of the way through the race. At about 70 miles from the finish, we took the lead. My team was determined, and we ended up pulling it off.” Cafro and fellow drivers Danny Prather, Levi Marana, and Marc Spaeth crossed the finish line in 29:48:58 hours.
Cafro’s 15 years of experience with the desert are a big help in preparing for whatever Baja has in store for a particular race. “Definitely, experience has a ton to do with it. And we have a good team with good communication. We’ve learned what works and what doesn’t, and we try not to deviate from that. Obviously, in Baja, anything can happen, so how you deal with it makes a difference as well,” he said.
Cafro is proud of his team’s incredible season and optimistic about 2008: “Winning all three Baja races and still defending our championship from last year was not an easy feat. We hope to definitely continue doing that. We just signed a factory deal with Honda.”
Maxxis has helped ease the team’s path to the podium by providing both quality products and outstanding support. “I’ve been with Maxxis for a long time now, and the relationship and support I have here are the best I have now; Maxxis is by far our best supporter,” Cafro says.
Maxxis is proud to sponsor Temecula Motorsports and looks forward to seeing them top the SCORE podium throughout 2008.
