Legendary rider Bill Ballance locked up a record-setting eighth GNCC ATV title with a victory at the Klotz Ironman, held October 27 in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Ballance needed only a 12th place finish to take the championship at the last race of the 2008 GNCC season.
Ballance, who battled fellow Maxxis rider Chris Borich for the overall lead throughout the season, fought off both Borich and Adam McGill to take the win. Speaking from the podium after the race, Ballance was clearly moved by the achievement of his longtime goal, according to gnccracing.com: "It hasn't even hardly sunk in yet. When I first started this years ago, I was just hoping to be a top ten rider. To win eight in a row, I can't even believe it. I'm just so happy; we weren't even trying to win this one. We were trying to take it easy and make sure we didn't have problems with the bike, and things started happening, and we ended up in the lead."
Borich did well until the last two laps of the race, taking the 26th consecutive ITP Holeshot Award for a Maxxis rider. “There was a bottleneck, and I tried to climb a hill, and it was all blown out, just deep ruts everywhere. So I got stuck there and lost some time, went to the back. I came back up and got stuck again on the last lap. That was about it,” he told gnccracing.com.
Dominating the series from the opener through the finale, Maxxis claimed seven of the top ten overall riders. The riders and their positions in the overall results: Ballance, first; Borich, second; Matt Smiley, fourth; Brandon Sommers, sixth; Taylor Kiser, seventh; Duane Johnson, ninth; and Chris Jenks, tenth.
Maxxis congratulates Bill Ballance on his phenomenal achievement and thanks all of these riders for their fine performances throughout the season.
