Maxxis Dominates in GNCC ATV; Borich Takes Lead in Title Race
Summer’s over, but the race for the GNCC championship is hotter than ever. With victories at Mountain Ridge and Unadilla, Chris Borich has taken the series’ lead. At press time, Bill Ballance, the other half of the Killer Bs, trailed by just eight points. The Geico Mountain Ridge GNCC was held September 1 in Somerset, Pennsylvania, and the Can-Am Unadilla GNCC was held September 15 in New Berlin, New York.
Maxxis swept the podium at Unadilla, with Ballance taking second and rookie phenom Duane Johnson rounding out the top three. Borich’s win came after a difficult race which saw him enter the last lap in fourth place, according to gnccracing.com: “I just had a bad beginning there,” said Borich. “A rock got stuck in the wheel and I went pretty far back and just started pushing hard. I got by Bill and all those guys that got bottled up on the last lap. I tried to set sail and he [Bill] caught back up and passed me right at the end. I got back by him and just tried to hold him off.” Ballance told gnccracing.com that “You have to get worried when it’s this close, getting down to championship crunch time. I’ve been in some real pressure points before where I had to make things happen.”
Riders on Razrs took seven spots in the top ten at Unadilla. The sixth through ninth place spots were taken by, in order, Matt Smiley, Brent Sturdivant, Taylor Kiser and Brandon Sommers.
Maxxis also dominated at Mountain Ridge, with Borich and Ballance first and second. Matt Smiley took fifth place at Mountain Ridge, and Brandon Sommers took seventh overall, along with his seventh Pro Am victory of the season. Duane Johnson grabbed eighth, Brent Sturdivant was ninth and Taylor Kiser rounded out the top ten. Sommers also won the ATVRiders.com holeshot award.
Maxxis congratulates all of these riders on their fine performances and thanks them for choosing the brand of champions.
