With a victory in the seventh and final stage, Health Net/Maxxis’ Karl Menzies won the 2007 International Tour de Toona in 15:51:59 hours. Teammate Rory Sutherland took second place in the overall GC. The race was held July 23-29 in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
Menzies, who also delivered wins in the second and fifth stages, said his victory was a team effort. In the final stage, “Rory took me to the final corner at 200 meters to go,” Menzies said. “It was the perfect lead-out. After he pulled off the front, I knew I was going to win the stage. Winning again was a reward for all the boys for the work they did this week. To top off the race with a win is as good as it gets. Everything went our way this week. All the plans worked. The team just clicked.”
The Australian rider noted that Matt Crane and John Murphy, who were unable to compete in the seventh stage, had also helped him throughout the race: “Those guys stepped up more than anyone. They’re just kids, but they rode like bloody superstars. They were super impressive, and it was just a shame they couldn’t start the final stage today.”
Menzies carried some tough emotional baggage throughout the race: he had just returned from spending three weeks with his father, who is terminally ill. ”At this point, there's only so much we can do for him," Menzies said. "He told me he wants me back racing. He wants me winning races. That's what I want to do for him."
Maxxis thanks Karl Menzies and all the members of Team Health Net presented by Maxxis for proving that champions ride Maxxis.
