Maxxis is the new title sponsor of the 2007 British Supersport Championship, one of the leading motorcycle racing series in the UK and Europe. The British Supersport Championship is second only to the British Superbike Championship (BSB) in popularity.
A top series in its own right, Supersport is highly rated by European motorcycle manufacturers and racers alike. The 2007 season, held over 13 weekends at 11 venues throughout the British Isles, begins April 9 with two races at Brands Hatch. The final championship round is set for October 14, also at Brands Hatch.
As the support series for the British Superbike Championship, Supersport is seen as the final step on the ladder to BSB and is considered the launching pad for future Superbike stars.
The Maxxis British Supersport Championship will enjoy support from six leading motorcycle manufacturers – Honda, Yamaha, Triumph, Suzuki, Ducati and Kawasaki – who supply 600cc road bikes for the series. Unlike BSB, Supersport imposes limits on the modifications teams can make to their machines, giving rise to close, competitive racing, full grids, and career enhancing opportunities.
“Our sponsorship of the 2007 Supersport series provides us with an ideal platform from which to promote the Maxxis brand and in particular, road tires like the Supermaxx,” said Maxxis International UK managing director Derek McMartin. “We are continuing to look for opportunities to raise our profile, and since over 90% of the Supersport fans who regularly attend race meetings own a car as well as a bike, they are a prime target audience for us.”
The series organizers report that 2006 attendance at British Superbike events increased by almost 9% over the previous year, to an average of 26,500. Because spectator numbers are consistent throughout the country, these figures suggest a loyal fan base with real potential for growth.
TV coverage of the Maxxis British Supersport Championship will be part of the SKY Sports and ITV packages. Last year, Sky Sports broadcast 29 programs during the season, amounting to more than 100 hours of programming for the British Superbike series and Supersport support races. Rounds of the Supersport Championship will also be broadcast as part of ITV1’s 2007 racing package, reaching around a million viewers a week.
In addition to wide TV exposure, Maxxis will benefit from trackside branding, podium ceremony advertising, and rider interview backdrop branding. All bikes in the series will carry the Maxxis brand on their front number plate sticker.
