What is your thought on 29" bikes?

I own one and love it.

My 2nd bike would be a 29er.

Not for me.

What is a 29er?

Q&A with Maxxis' Creighton King
It’s a good thing that Creighton King enjoys driving. After all, on a typical day, the former pro rock crawler is on the road from 8:00 a.m. to as late as midnight, taking the Maxxis support truck to events all over the country.

King recently took a few minutes – while traveling, naturally – to talk with MaxxDaddy about the ups and downs of life on the road.

MD: How are you enjoying driving the support truck?
CK: You know, it’s like a dream job. All I do each week is, I travel around the country and go to the greatest races in the sport and watch these teams compete. And to watch Maxxis grow – we’ve gone from being the new kids on the block to really being dominant in some sports like rock crawling.

MD: Do you get a positive response as you travel – on the highways as well as at events?
CK: People are always giving me a thumbs-up, or they’ll stop and tell me about the Maxxis tires they run or how much they love them. And everywhere, people ask for stickers. I usually keep them up in the driver’s seat with me.

MD: What kind of schedule do you keep?
CK: Usually, I do 40 events a year covering the entire US. This year, I’ll drive all the way back and forth across the country a dozen times, approximately 65,000 miles per year. For example, last weekend, I was in the Upper Peninsula in Michigan and then went to Tennessee and then to San Diego – this is over the course of three weekends. During the week, I try to drive home or fly commercial

MD: How is what you’re doing now different from competition?
CK: The thing that’s really fun about it is not just caring about myself and my team, but caring about all these guys: to share in their victories and give them encouragement when they need it. It’s great to hang out with the guys; I have people I hang out with on the east and west coast. I also have the opportunity to do some bicycle racing, like at the Tour de Georgia and the Amgen Tour of California. And it’s great to hang out with the BMX guys and the drifting guys with Formula D.

MD: When did you start rock crawling?
CK: While I was in school I started rock crawling. I was one of a team of five or six guys who helped start UROC. I also got interested in marketing [through UROC].

MD: What originally attracted you to rock crawling?
CK: I grew up with two loves of my family which was jeeping and airplanes. We always went to the Easter Jeep Safari - I don’t think we ever found Easter baskets that they weren’t hidden under a red rock! When I was growing up both my mom and dad drove TJ-7’s.

King, who has Bachelor of Science degrees in Finance and Accounting, has been married to wife Tonya for 11 years. The couple has one daughter, 20-month-old Allison, and another on the way in November. The family resides in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Be sure to look for King and the Maxxis support truck at your next event!
