Across North America, temperatures are soaring – and so are Maxxis’ sponsored riders, racking up four national championships in just one weekend despite every challenge that came their way.
In a double victory for Maxxis, Ryan Trebon of Kona Les Gets and Georgia Gould of the LUNA Chix won the men’s and women’s NORBA National Mountain Bike Championships. Trebon never relinquished the lead he established at the start of the four-lap men’s race, winning in 2:02.24. As he told velonews.com, “I was hurting on that last lap but I just said, ‘There's no way I'm going to give this away. I've been out here for an hour and forty minutes by myself, and I'm not going to give it away’... The heat was getting to me and I went through like eight water bottles. I was just trying to keep it together. But this is a good one."
Gould, on the other hand, won the women’s US title by steadily gaining on her opponents and seizing the lead to win in 1:46.25, nearly a minute-and-a-half ahead of the next rider, according to cyclingnews.com. The race was held July 14 in Sonoma, California.
Two days later, Kona’s Barry Wicks took the US championship in short track, after grabbing the lead in the last lap. Trebon, who scored the third spot on the podium, helped his teammate throughout the race with repeated attacks, according to velonews.com.
And north of the border, Team Maxxis’ Geoff took his second straight Canadian National cross country championship, with a victory July 15 at Kamloops, British Columbia.
The NORBA champ overcame a crash – and what was later found to be a concussion - in the first lap to take the victory, gaining the lead close to the end of the race. As he told canadiancyclist.com, “That was one of the hardest crashes I have ever had. It really shook me up and I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to continue…I probably stood there for 30 seconds, getting my bearings, checking if the bike was broken. It took me until the feed zone to feel like riding again. But once I got going, all I could do was push it as hard as I could, and see what happened." The 2006 Canadian title is Kabush’s third overall. Teammate Mathieu Toulouse also did well in the race with a fifth place finish.
Maxxis, brand of champions, congratulates all of these fine riders on their latest titles.
