It’s his first year with Two Brothers – and Steve Drew couldn’t be happier.
At press time Drew, who finished fourth at the 2004 X Games, had plans to race in June’s AMA Supermoto Championship race, to be held at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. And in August, he’ll compete in this year’s X Games in Los Angeles.
Drew, recuperating after a mishap during the STTARS event in Fontana, California, has decided that his recovery schedule will allow him to get back into racing action for the rest of this season. He finished third in the 450 class at the Stateline Supermoto Challenge, held in Nevada April 3.
His recovery period won’t really be downtime for Drew, who has plenty to keep him busy even when he isn’t testing his ride or racing: his full-time job with Two Brothers has him performing all pipe development for their four-stroke motorcycles. This is an area in which he has plenty of experience, as Two Brothers noted in their December 2004 announcement of his new position: Watts “has spent the last decade designing and building exhaust systems for such notables as both the Honda and Yamaha factory motocross teams.”
Born and raised in Temecula, California, Drew started racing motocross when he was just ten years old. Initially interested because of his father’s ride, he became “this obsessed kid riding motorcycles. It was all I wanted to do. My dad would take me to supercross races. I was just like a kid who wants to play baseball and wants to be like his idols. It’s just kind of stuck with me for a really long time,” he told MaxxDaddy. This love of racing, he says, compels him to keep going even through the challenges of working at a demanding job while still finding time to test his bike, practice, and race.
Drew finds his reward for overcoming those challenges in the joy of competition and in the camaraderie that he says is so much a part of supermoto. He’s developed a bond with the people he sees at every race, and racers will often lend equipment to a fellow driver in a tight spot – evidence of the fact that “all the people involved in the sport are really good people.”
Steve Drew is also one of the good guys. Maxxis is proud to sponsor this talented rider.
