With his victory in the USPRO race, the final event of the Wachovia Cycling Series, Chris Wherry of Team Health Net presented by Maxxis is the new U.S. National Champion. Wherry triumphed in the June 5 race by gaining the lead in the final climb up Philadelphia’s Lemon Hill. As the first American to cross the finish line, Wherry was awarded the stars and stripes jersey which goes to the U.S. champion. Wherry’s teammate Greg Henderson took 9th place and Ivan Dominguez took 15th in the USPRO.
Shortly after the race, Wherry told cyclingnews.com that the impact of his victory had not yet hit him: “I’m just going to go home and relax – let it sink in. It’s going to be a week or so until it does. I’m going to sleep in this jersey every night until I feel it!”
The Wachovia Cycling Series was a triumph for Health Net/Maxxis, which won all three races. The first team ever to sweep the series, as noted by VeloNews.com, the Health Net/Maxxis crew accomplished this cycling first with three different riders. In addition to Wherry’s victory, Gord Fraser won the June 2 race in Trenton, New Jersey, and Henderson won the May 31 race in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. And in what was perhaps a sign of the great results to come, Dominguez won the CSC Invitational, held two days before the kick-off of the Wachovia series in Arlington, Virginia.
Wherry was exuberant about Health Net/Maxxis’ sweep of the series: “My team is unbelievable – they are so strong right now. Health Net/Maxxis is just on. We said we were going to win every race here – I thought it was a little high hopes, but we did it…They are the best – we are so tight. They are my best friends, my family on the road,” he told cyclingnews.com.
In the Trenton race three days earlier, Fraser worked with teammate Tyler Farrar to take the lead in the final sprint for the finish. Farrar took 5th place and Henderson 11th in the Trenton race.
Health Net/Maxxis members formed a train in the final 1000 meters of the Lancaster Invitational, and Henderson was able to sprint the last 250 meters to take the victory. Health Net/Maxxis members made up more than a quarter of the lead group of 15 which formed in the final four laps, and took the team competition at the Lancaster race, the opening event of the series. Dominguez earned third place at Lancaster.
Maxxis is proud to sponsor Chris Wherry and all the members of Team Health Net presented by Maxxis.
