Alison Dunlap: A Champion Designs a Winning Tire
2005 will undoubtedly be memorable for Alison Dunlap for many reasons – chief among them that the cyclist has announced that the current season will be the last of her 17-year career. But 2005 is also the year that Dunlap’s signature tire, the Alison Dunlap ADvantage, has been introduced. And that should make this year one to remember for both Dunlap and her fans.

Dunlap is spending her last year in professional cycling as one of the Luna Chix, the team founded by Clif Bar CEO Gary Erickson in 2001. While she says that joining a brand new team –a group which by definition has no track record - is always risky, she was persuaded to become one of the first Luna Chix in part because of Erickson’s enthusiasm and determination to promote women’s sports.

Her instincts proved correct: four years later, Luna Chix is going strong, a prominent presence in a sport dominated by men. Dunlap’s belief in supporting women in cycling, along with her vision for a new cross country tire, was the impetus for the creation of the ADvantage. Designed by Dunlap and Maxxis, the large volume tire is ideally suited for loose, rocky ground, reducing, reducing the chances of pinch flats and providing a smooth ride at a lower tire pressure.

Dunlap’s astonishing record includes a World Cup championship, a World Championship, a gold medal at the Pan Am Games, two Olympic Games, (she finished seventh in mountain bike in 2000), and the 2004 U.S. National Championships in cross country and short track cross country. With these and so many other accomplishments, she could easily rest on her laurels at this point in her career. Instead, Dunlap is now focused on sharing her talents and love of cycling with others. The Alison Dunlap Adventure Camps lead small groups of cyclists through some of the most challenging trails in the American West, with breathtaking scenery and the chance to hone cycling skills for beginners, intermediate, and advanced riders. Campers can choose to sleep in the great outdoors or in the comfort of a condominium. For several days of the trip, a massage is available in the evening to soothe the sore muscles of every camper.

Maxxis is proud to sponsor Alison Dunlap, who is certain to be a success in her post-cycling career. For more information on this winning athlete, please visit www.alisondunlap.com.
