Team Revo Braves Adventure Racing Challenges
Any sport which requires that racers compete while tied together demands a lot. And that’s only one of the challenges presented by the relatively new sport of adventure racing, which boasts a section requiring racers to move over and around obstacles while linked at the feet. Maxxis is showing its support by sponsoring Team Revo, whose members have a combined total of more than 30 years of racing experience.

Experience is crucial to master a sport which presents continual surprises: racers never know the requirements of a particular event until they’re actually competing. And those requirements can include running, mountain biking, kayaking, rappelling, white water swimming, climbing, and in-line skating, just to name a few. The “sprints” in any given race are a minimum of two to three hours, and entire races can last as long as 7 to 14 days. Coed teams of three to five members compete in each race.

Fortunately, the members of Team Revo boast backgrounds which suggest that they revel in challenges. Although their experiences are varied, the team members each bring skill, strength, and endurance to the group.

  • Team Captain Patrick Watson is a NORBA expert mountain biker who set records in cross country and track & field while in college. A Category 3 road bike and criterium racer, Watson also enjoys rock climbing and kayaking. Watson has six years of experience in adventure racing.

  • An actor and model, Josh Crosby is a world champion rower and experienced triathlon competitor. Crosby is a graduate of Brown University, rowing for the school’s team as well as the National Team during his undergraduate career. The multi-talented Crosby also has a line of clothing, Alphabet Soup Designs, which he began in 2004 with co-creator Charlotte Martin.

  • A veteran of numerous triathlons as well as mountain bike and running events, Heather Curwen has a Master’s degree in Kinesiology. Curwen is a NORBA expert cross country racer and Sea Otter Classic mountain bike race champion. The mother of a small child, Curwen is also a group exercise instructor.

  • Joining the team for 2005 is Windy Hutchings, who began adventure racing in 1999 and is also an expert mountain biker, triathlete, road biker, and duathlete. Hutchings ran cross country and track at the University of Utah, and with her previous team took first place in several adventure races in 2004. When she’s not busy racing, Hutchings works as an actuary.

  • Also new to Team Revo this year is Dave Marks, who will take over as lead navigator. An adventure racing coach and personal trainer, Marks is also a weightlifter, duathlete, and expert mountain biker. According to the team’s website, Marks began his racing career with a local 10K, after a fall from a four-story building left him temporarily unable to play basketball and lift weights.
