From the outside looking in, professional cycling seems like the kind of grueling pursuit that would consume every waking moment and every spare ounce of energy. But for Geoff Kabush, cycling is also about enjoying what he does.
“You won’t survive if you don’t have fun,” he says. Without genuine enjoyment in their sport, cyclists burn out. It helps, he adds, to be part of a great team, like the Maxxis-Giant line-up he’s led this year. With teammates Adam Craig and Jonny Sundt, along with guest riders like Cesar Grajales and Kashi Leuchs, Kabush has had the foundation for a spectacular season.
And 2004 has indeed been a great year for Kabush. Since becoming a Maxxis-sponsored rider early this year, the Canadian cyclist has won NORBA titles in short track and cross country. He also secured the 2004 Cyclocross Canadian National Champion – his second Canadian National title. Kabush, who finished ninth in the 2000 Olympics, plans to continue his winning partnership with Maxxis in 2005.
With a degree in mechanical engineering, Kabush is often able to use his training to give specific – and very valuable – feedback on a tire’s performance to Maxxis researchers and designers. Kabush races on the new Locust model tires, because he likes the side knobs that give him great grip in corners. For training, he uses Maxxis road models that offer resistance to punctures.
For the next several years, he has many short-term goals, but his overriding focus is the next Olympic Games, to be held in Beijing in 2008. Maxxis looks forward to a winning partnership with Geoff Kabush for years to come.
