Bidding for Cognis Heats Up

Reports by Reuters, The Cleveland Plain Dealer and British international business newspaper The Financial Times advise that Lubrizol has joined in the fray for Cognis by making a €3 (US$4.1) billion offer. Permira, an international private equity firm, based in London, and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners, the co-owners of Cognis, reportedly are also in sale talks with several other parties, including German chemicals group BASF.

Valvoline Expands Engine Guarantee

Valvoline has expanded its Valvoline Engine Guarantee program and is rolling out a new companion advertising campaign.  The guarantee up to 300,000 miles, originally available only to vehicles with 75,000 miles or less, has been increased to vehicles with up to 125,000 miles. The initial television spots aired during this past weekend's opening telecasts of the 2010 NBA Playoffs.

Shell to Keep Kenya Lube Operations

Further Shell's previous announcement that it plans to sell the lube businesses in all 21 African countries except South Africa and Egypt, Shell is now saying that it plans to retain the lubes business in Kenya and is not keen to sell its lubricant blending plant in Mombasa. Sell says that it would opt to sign a distributorship deal with third party dealers and that it prefers the sale of all 21 African operating markets to one buyer.

Asia Pacific Base Oil Market Report

The Asian regional base oil market is still strong especially in North East Asia (NEA). In South East Asia (SEA), the market traded range-bound this past week after almost two months of strong upward rally. The SEA buyers have had secured their inventory positions for the next 1-2 months as the base oil prices moved up significantly during the past couple weeks.

Eastern Hemisphere Base Oil Price Report

Crude oil prices traded in a range of US$82-86 per barrel last week, with light sweet crude oil closing at US$82.95 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange last Friday. Eastern hemisphere base oil prices increased in all regions, typically in the range of US$15-25 per MT, with the greatest increases being Solvent Neutrals ex-Iran and ex-Saudi Arabia and Bright Stock ex-Singapore.
