2011 Lists of Largest 100 For-Hire and 100 Private Truck Fleets in North America Issued

Transport Topics has issued its '2011 Transport Topics 100' lists of the 100 largest for-hire trucking fleets in North America (companies such as UPS, FedEx, Con-way Inc., YRC Worldwide and J.B. Hunt Transport Services, which are the top five) and the 100 largest private trucking fleets (companies such as Pepsico, Coca-Cola Enterprises, Sysco Systems, Wal-Mart and US Foodservice, which are the top five).

There are seven (7) carriers on this years for-hire list that were not on last year's list, (48) Day & Ross Transportation Group, (49) United Vision Logistics, (68) Bison Transport Inc., (84) Towne Air Freight, (89) Acme Truck Lines, (97) Panther Expedited Services, and (100) SLM Transport.

There are eleven (11) carriers on this years private trucking list that were not on last year's list, (14) Nestle USA, (20) Gibson Energy, (29) JBS USA Holdings, (44) Lowe's Companies Inc., (78) United Grocers Inc., (79) KaHE Distributors, (91) General Parts International, (92) ThyssenKrupp USA, (97) Orgill Inc., (98) Ferrellgas Partners, and (100) Ferguson Enterprises..

Used oil recycling and re-refining firm Safety-Kleen, Plano, Texas, which first made the list the previous year at number 98, climbed two positions and now ranks number 96, operating 250 tractors, 1,620 straight trucks, 545 pickups and cargo vans, and 664 trailers.

Many of these new "entrants" into this list are not small companies. Glendale, CA-based Nestle USA, for example, who jumped into the 100 largest private carrier list this year (No. 14), operates 2,020 tractors, 2,812 straight trucks, as well as 1,463 trailers, had annual sales in 2009 of $27 billion. Almost half of the companies on the Transport Topics Top 100 Private Carriers list are involved in the distribution of agricultural products and food and beverages.

In total, the number of motorized vehicles represents an enormous amount. For example, the number 1 company on the for-hire list, UPS operates 99,800 company-owned tractors, vans, straight trucks package cars and motorcycles. The number 4 company, YRC Worldwide, operates 16,152 company-owned tractors...... that's a lot of motor oil and other automotive lubricants consumed annually.

The 2010 TRANSPORT TOPICS Top 100 For-Hire Carriers and Top 100 Private Carriers lists is a project of Transport Topics Publishing Group and features data compiled from annual reports of publicly owned companies and directly from management of privately owned firms. The list ranks companies by the number of heavy-duty tractors they operate, using data from company management and government sources.

Also listed for each company are details such as address; officer(s); web site address; number of tractors, straight trucks, trailers and other equipment; annual sales or net income; employees; and description of business. Transport Topics publishes the Transport Topics 100 in order to accurately document the size and scope of the largest trucking operations and provide analysis of the trends shaping the industry.
