Humanity Lends a Hand
Yasawa Island Mission, January 2009
by Linda Kwasny

We experienced the worst of times and the best of times on our January mission to Fiji.

Our arrival was perfectly aligned with the largest deluge of rain in 60 years, flooding the western side of Fiji in Nadi, destroying infrastructure and leaving many villages in the Yasawa Islands with no viable food from their crops.  Partnering with Navutu Stars Resort we had an extremely productive mission.

Cataract Team Performs 35 Surgeries
The floods can't stop "Team Loloma"
by P. Lance Hendricks, MD

Colonial War Memorial Hospital Loloma Team Our cataract surgery team landed in Nadi on Monday, January 19th. They were brought to Suva (a 130 mile trip to the eastern end of the main island) from the airport in Nadi on the western end. The trip was slowed by several hours due to residual flooding from the heavy rains the previous week.

One Lamp per Bure Project Update
Loloma's Piolt Solar Project--Enpowerment Through Energy
by Jane Lenoard

Unfortunately the January cyclone interrupted the Vuaki Village site assessment and prevented the fundraising village rummage sale for the ‘One Lamp Per Bure’ project.  However, Terry Holladay took photographs of the village and a village elder gave Linda Kwasny an excellent village plan including a thorough building inventory so progress was made.

$650 donated in flood relief effort
by Bob Sykes

Vinaka friends. In January our team found itself in the midst of the worst flooding in Fiji’s recent history. In a special edition of this newsletter, Flood Relief Newsletter, we asked supporters to donate to help with extraordinary costs of a rural population dealing with this crisis.  The generosity was heartwarming.  Within a week, we received $650 for emergency relief from various supporters.

by Eileen Natuzzi MD

Dr. Eileen Natuzzi using Sonosite portable ultrasound in the Solomon Islands

It is indeed heart warming that several medical manufacturing corporations have stepped in with the donation or "loan" of very expensive medical equipment for our continuing work in the South Pacific.
