Producing Grease Via Microwaves
Environmental Lubricants Manufacturing produced bio-based greases by using microwaves earlier this month, demonstrating a technology created by University of Northern Iowa researchers and an Iowa-based industrial microwave company.

OSHA has cited Calumet Shreveport Lubricants & Waxes LLC for 22 alleged workplace safety violations at its Shreveport, La., refinery, with proposed fines adding up to $173,000.

Chesapeake Acquires Skyline
Motor oil distributor Chesapeake Petroleum acquired the business of Skyline Oil, broadening its market from Maryland into Virginia. The price was not disclosed.

Briefly Noted
Pep Boys’ 590 stores will recommend Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil, and recreational vehicles retailer Camping World selected ExxonMobil as its exclusive lubricants supplier.  Wilmar International subsidiary PGEO Group, which acquired 91 percent of Natural Oleochemicals from Kulim (Malaysia) Berhard in July, bought the remaining 9 percent for 42.5 million Malaysian ringgit (U.S. $13.5 million).  The National Ag-Based Lubricants Center received a $370,000 U.S. Dept. of Transportation grant to test biobased rail lubricants and greases.  Colfax has acquired Baric Group, which supplies fluid-handling systems, for an undisclosed amount.
 
U.S. Base Oil Price Report
The word on the street this week echoes what the U.S. base oil arena has experienced for much of August. Supply remains a concern amid still-healthy demand, and price ideas are holding steady for the paraffinic side while naphthenic values are firming.

Producers are taking stock of their supply situation after the recess, whilst buyers are assessing inventories and their requirements for restocking during the final quarter of 2010. Status quo remains regarding prices in the European mainland, with few deals transacted during the last days of August.
