Truckers Fail to Sway EPA
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has turned aside a request by the American Trucking Associations to delay a mandate requiring cleaner diesel engines beginning in October. The association filed a petition June 19 complaining that the new emissions caps would hurt fleet operators by driving up vehicle costs, shortening maintenance intervals and increasing engine wear rates.

U.S. Lube Sales Dropped in First Quarter
First quarter lubricant sales in the United States fell 2.7 percent from the same period of 2001, according to the latest Quarterly Index of Lubricant Sales, released Aug. 12 by the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association.

Pioneering Rerefinery Sold
A Western Canada waste management company has agreed to acquire the assets of Mohawk Lubricants Ltd., including the world’s first commercial rerefinery for used oil. Calgary-based Newalta Corp. will pay Canadian $9 million for the 19-year-old North Vancouver, B.C., plant and its associated collection network.

Base Oil Price Report
Concerns about a shortage in the United States of Group II-plus have abated in recent weeks, although demand continues to be strong. Buyers and sellers agree that the changed outlook is due to two delays – one in the schedule for the next passenger car motor oil upgrade, the second for a maintenance turnaround at ExxonMobil’s Baytown, Texas, refinery.
