World Lube Demand Rebounds
2002 may not seem like a great year for the lubricants industry but, for much of the world, it’s turning out better than 2001. That’s the assessment of German lubricant manufacturer Fuchs Petrolub AG, which is projecting that worldwide lube demand will grow 1.6 percent this year, to 35.7 million metric tons.

Ashland Taps O'Brien
Ashland Inc., Valvoline's parent company, announced yesterday that James J. O’Brien, 48, has been named president and chief operating officer, effective immediately. O’Brien will become chairman and CEO on Nov. 15, when Paul W. Chellgren steps down. No successor has been announced for O’Brien, who was senior v.p. and group operating officer with responsibility for Ashland Specialty Chemical and Ashland Distribution Co. He was president of Valvoline from the mid 90s until earlier this year.

Gold Parachutes for P-QS Top Brass
Having gained shareholder approval Aug. 1, Pennzoil-Quaker State Co. moved one step closer to being purchased by Shell Oil. That placed Chief Executive Officer Jim Postl and several other top Pennzoil-Quaker State officials one step closer to a big payday. Postl's departure package when the deal goes through is valued between $22 million and $32 million.

Installers Seek Voice on GF-4
After a bad experience with GF-3, U.S. quick lube operators are getting more involved in the next passenger car motor oil upgrade. The Texas-based Automotive Oil Change Association recently claimed partial credit for a one-year delay in the adoption of GF-4, and says it will continue urging those developing the new motor oil specification to ensure that it protects older cars.

Infineum to Sell Mobilad G
Infineum and ExxonMobil Chemical have signed a gear oil additives agreement under which Infineum will become the exclusive marketer of ExxonMobil Chemical’s Mobilad G series gear oil additive packages. ExxonMobil Chemical will continue to supply synthetic lubricant basestocks as well as Mobilad C series products.

When Baytown goes down, it's an eclipse of the sun, says one industry observer. But what if Baytown decides not to go down? ExxonMobil's giant Baytown, Texas, refinery has decided to postpone a planned maintenance turnaround, from Nov. 1 until Feb. 1, 2003.
