No GF-4 Until 4-04
American and Japanese auto makers have postponed the next passenger car motor oil upgrade for 12 months, scheduling marketplace entry for April 2004. Those drafting the GF-4 specification are debating the trade-off between lower phosphorus content and longer category lifespan. Meanwhile, Savant's Ted Selby suggests that the right chemistry could make phosphorus levels almost irrelevant.

Mexlub Could Lose Lock on Gas Stations
Mexico’s national oil company, Pemex, and its largest lubricant maker, Mexlub, confirmed recently that they are engaged in negotiations that could unlock the latter’s hold on motor oil sales through the country’s gasoline stations.

Base Oil Price Report
As the paraffinic side of the U.S. base oil market wrapped up its third price hike in three months, the naphthenic side began what could be its first across-the-board increases in nearly a year. Valero and Ergon announced naphthenic price increases and sources said other nap suppliers may do likewise.
