ILMA: Auto Makers Will Postpone GF-4
American and Japanese automakers have decided to delay adoption of GF-4, the next passenger car motor oil upgrade, according to the Independent Lubricant Manufacturers Association. Automakers decided last week that a new standard cannot be developed fast enough to have GF-4 oils available by the fall of 2003, to protect emissions control systems required on model year 2004 cars.

Milacron Focuses on Fluids, Plastics
Milacron Inc. announced yesterday that it has agreed to sell Valenite, its North American machine tool business, to the Swedish firm Sandvik for $175 million, in order to focus on production of plastics processing equipment and industrial fluids. Milacron's fluid sales were close to $100 million last year.

Base Oil Price Report
During an uneventful week for the U.S. base oil market, buyers and sellers were left to mull a reported delay in the next passenger car motor oil upgrade. Individuals from both camps said a postponement of GF-4 could slow a further shift in demand to premium stocks.

Correction
A May 29 article on Factory Mutual’s new standards for fire-resistant fluids incorrectly reported the flammability classification of phosphate esters. According to Akzo Nobel, phosphate esters will be in the preferred Group 1 class (fluids that are usually unable to stabilize a spray flame), while polyol esters may be Group 2 (less flammable than mineral oil but able to stabilize a spray flame under certain conditions).
