Can Diesel Avoid a Pile-up?
Looming diesel engine emissions restrictions in the United States and Europe could lead to crackdowns on phosphorus, sulfated ash and sulfur -- byproducts of familiar engine oil additives. Chevron Oronite warns that replacing those additives will require a great deal of work and money, and could spell the end of backward compatibility for diesel oils.

Fuchs' Profit Jumps 35 Percent
Fuchs Petrolub AG reported last week that its first quarter net income increased 35.3 percent, due primarily to consolidation of its ownership of a former German joint venture with Shell.

Farmland Files for Bankruptcy Protection
Agricultural cooperative Farmland Industries filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Friday. The Kansas City, Mo., company said it will sell non-core assets, but a spokeswoman said it has not decided if its grease business will be among them.

Base Oil Price Report
It looked like Follow the Leader once again in the U.S. base oil market, as suppliers completed a round of price hikes begun two weeks ago by ExxonMobil. The latest round showed a lack of consensus, however, about which Group I grades have tightest supply.
