Fire Knocks Out Ergon Hydrotreater
Fire damaged Ergon Inc.’s refinery in Vicksburg, Miss., last week, sidelining the biggest U.S. source of naphthenic base oil for four to five weeks. Industry sources said the downtime will squeeze a naphthenic market that was already tight.

NPRA: Lube Sales Sank in 2001
U.S. lubricant sales volumes for the fourth quarter of 2001 were 2.9 percent lower than in the same period of 2000, according to the latest Quarterly Index of Lubricant Sales report. The report from the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association said sales volumes for the entire year were down 4.4 percent.

Base Oil Price Report
Citgo raised all of its base oil posted prices by 5 cents per gallon last Thursday, a week after ExxonMobil and Valero increased prices on Group I stocks. Information about Sunoco’s prices was unavailable.

Correction
An article on tribology in space in the May 1 issue should have referred to bearings made of silicon nitride. The composition of the bearings was misidentified.
